AJK's annual Literacy Night was huge success. Students and parents enjoyed a presentation from special guest and author Natoia Franklin. Franklin read from her newly published book Miguel and His Miracle Kick. She also shared useful reading strategies including a song to help readers remember how to infer. All participants received a bookmark with the inference song on it. Students and parents were also challenged with writing a persuasive argument on whether or not 4th and 5th graders should have cell phones. Participants used the OREO graphic organizer, a tool that helps students plan and brainstorm before writing. Attendees worked with academic vocabulary words; creating sentences, pictures and definitions for the vocabulary words. Ā Finally, students and parents learned about the Zones of Regulation. The Zones of Regulation is an internationally renowned intervention which helps children to manage difficult emotions, known as ā€˜self-regulation’.
